First Look at Rhino - 'Kraven the Hunter' Releases Second Trailer

Kraven the Hunter has released its second trailer, which features our first proper look at villain ‘the Rhino’.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes center stage as Sergei Kravinoff, a man driven by vengeance and his primal connection to the animal kingdom. This trailer showcases his transformation from a hunter shaped by his father’s ruthless upbringing (played by Russell Crowe) into a predator of criminals with extraordinary abilities, which, judging by the previous trailer, have something to do with an interaction with lion blood.

The trailer also teases the introduction of classic Spider-Man villain the Rhino. The very brief glimpse, as well as the tease from the last trailer, suggest that this version of the character will differ from the comics, as well as his previous live-action portrayal, leaning into a more biological transformation, rather than a physical suit combined with enhanced strength, or a Rhino that is technologically-based, likely to rival Kraven’s own animalistic nature.

Fan reactions to the second trailer for Kraven the Hunter have been mixed, with the online community divided over various aspects of the film’s presentation. One point of contention is the portrayal of Kraven himself, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Many fans expressed disappointment that Kraven lacks the traditional Russian accent associated with the character in the comics, games, and animated series. One fan quipped, “He’s not even doing a big Russian accent—that’s Kraven’s entire thing“.

Additionally, Russell Crowe’s voiceover as Kraven’s father sparked amusement and criticism. Viewers struggled to decipher Crowe’s accent in the trailer, leading to humorous interpretations of his line, “You will become a legend.” Fans jokingly claimed to hear phrases like “pretzel” or “wetsuit” instead, with one commenter calling Crowe’s vocal delivery part of his “worldwide, wacky accent tour”. This was certainly not helped by the exorbitant use of splicing sentences together for the trailer from several different lines, making the lines sound stilted and unnatural.

Some fans also mocked the editing of the trailer, citing how often certain lines from Johnny Cash’s song were repeated, as well as the repetition of certain words throughout the trailer, such as how often the word “hunter” was displayed, alongside the film’s unique age rating. This left some viewers feeling like they were being hit over the head with the branding. One fan remarked: “Feels like they gave the trailer editor 2 assignments “Make sure people know it’s R-RATED  and that he’s a  HUNTER!!, in fact try and put as much of the word hunter in there as you can!!””

At this point, I think Sony makes more money with the trailers on YouTube

The YouTube comments are littered with viewers making jokes about Kraven, Sony, or the trailer itself, such as the above quote. However, not all comments were critical, as some actually praised aspects shown in these two and a half minutes, such as one comment which praised the look of Rhino: Having rhino as an actual rhino instead of a silly mech suit is really cool to see”, while another shared excitement for this Rhino rendition’s debut: I went from, “Really? This is the Rhino?” to “NOW THAT IS THE RHINO!!!””

Although there was much ridicule for the trailer, this surprise release did do its job at getting some fans excited, as plenty have praised the level of violence seen throughout the brief peeks at the action scenes. Others actually found the trailer’s unconventional release to be rather exciting, as a commenter on the trailer’s YouTube shared their excitement for the film from this trailer: “They just randomly dropped this trailer without any build up. This should be an interesting movie”.

While the trailer has sparked plenty of conversation, its reception highlights both anticipation for the live-action debut of Kraven and lingering concerns about the film’s execution. Fans seem eager to see whether the movie can deliver on its potential.
