Blood, Brains, and Russell Crowe – ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Releases First Trailer

Blood, Brains, and Russell Crowe - 'Kraven the Hunter' Releases First Trailer

Kraven the Hunter has released its first ‘red band’ trailer, which shows much action, blood, and Spider-Man connections.

The trailer marks a first for Sony, in that one of their Marvel releases is Rated-R, a first for their universe. This feat is long overdue, as fans have been crying out for an R-Rated release since before the release of VenomKraven the Hunter promises to deliver on these fan desires, as we see Kraven throwing bear traps into the heads of poachers, and going as far as to bite one’s nose off. It looks like Sony may have excelled with the action in this piece, although that waits to be seen.

The advertisement also delivers intriguing story points, such as the character of Kraven’s brother Dmitri, who in the comics is ‘the Chameleon’, a popular member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, as well as the appearance of the infamous Spider-Man villain ‘the Rhino’, although some fans will be disheartened by this feature, as it is a different rendition of Paul Giamatti’s in Amazing Spider-Man 2, firmly assigning Sony’s “villain” universe a different designation to Garfield’s, when many fans were hoping these could take place in his universe and continue that story.

However, fan reception to the trailer is largely mixed. One issue comic fans are quickly picking up on, is the supposed origin of Kraven in the movie. His original origin story in the comics is an ordinary, but skilled hunter, stealing a potion from a witch doctor to enhance his abilities. Here, it seems that a drop of lions blood in his wound turns him into Kraven, which is not faithful to the source material and bound to upset comic readers.

Rhino’s end-trailer tease was also inaccurate to his comic book counterpart, as his rhino element is portrayed as a mutation, instead of a suit that he wears, something eagle-eyed fans picked up on. One viewer in the YouTube comments joked: I love the part when the Rhino got his powers from a drop of Rhinoceros blood and learned “with great horns, comes great horniness”.

Further criticisms of the trailer pointed out Taylor-Johnson’s American accent, complaining about the character being Americanised instead of keeping true to his Russian identity, pointing out that Russell Crowe’s Nikolai Kravinoff (Kraven’s father) was more faithful as Kraven than Kraven himself: “To me his father gave me a lot more og Kraven vibes than the protagonist. He has the voice, the look and the spirit of the og Kraven”. Another user found humour in this idea, writing: Kraven’s dad sounds more like Kraven than Kraven himself lmao. Why did they not give him the accent?’.

Props to Sony for just coming up with villain origin stories completely improv style. “He has… lion blood? Lion blood. It gives him hunt powers!

What this trailer release seems to indicate, is a confirmation that at some point, likely in a future release, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter will meet and form a rivalry with the web-slinging Spider-Man, as the description reads: “Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film”.

While we’ve been well aware of Sony’s plans to cross over their Spider-Man-less universe with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, we’ve never had any form of confirmation that Sony were actually going to make that happen. This is the first official evidence of that, and it’s one that, judging by the reception to Sony’s other releases, fans will have mixed reactions to.

Scrolling through the online reactions to this trailer, one comment stood out to me, as  one which perfectly sums up the issues with this trailer and movie that most detractors have: Radioactive Lion + no accent on Kraven are weird choices. Rest seemed fine I guess. Will probably wait until it’s available to rent/stream. Spidey’s rogues without Spidey just doesn’t interest me all that much”.

Looking at the reactions to the Venom movies and Morbius, one really has to ask whether having these villain-turned-hero standalone movies, are even worth it. Madame Web’s trailer recently got ridiculed, so hopes for that movie aren’t high. One commenter broke down the state of Sony’s standalone releases, questioning Sony’s intent: Still really bugs me that it looks like we’ll be getting yet another villain turned anti-hero. “My father puts evil into the world. I help take it out” yet the tag line of the movie is villains aren’t born, they’re made? Why is he acting like a hero then? Can we for once get a movie about a villain actually being a villain?“.
